Our coach Mrs Emma-Jane Billington-Phillips is a qualified FIDE arbiter who has been teaching chess since she was a teenager in her parents’ dining room while studying, progressing on to teaching children in schools as a full time job 28 years ago. She has taught teams to become National Champions, individuals to become part on the England squad, and many many children to play for the Surrey County – Wey Valley – Team which this year she organises and manages all of the Wey valley, Surrey under 9, under 11 and under 11 girls teams because she wants the children to be able to take part as this year it was all online. Previous to covid-19 Emma-Jane only taught over the board (OTB) chess, but since has found there is a great benefit to online coaching, believing children get more out of online lessons as they are interactive and there are less distractions unlike in a classroom where it is easy to daydream while looking through a window.
