EPSCA and the Wey Valley, Surrey

EPSCA is the English Primary Schools Chess Association.  It organises National Schools tournaments and National area and County team competitions for primary aged children.  More information can be found on the EPSCA website: www.epsca.org.uk

Wey Valley Chess – Surrey

Wey Valley Chess affiliates to EPSCA and each year we select children to represent us in their National Team Championships (Inter- Association Championships).    We select three squads of players; 24 under 11 girls, 32 under 11 girls and boys and 30 under 9 girls and boys from our Wey Valley, Surrey New Year Rapid Play which will take place 22nd January 2023.

Players selected for the squads will be contacted by email by 31/1/23 and are entitled to buy a Wey Valley sweatshirt and/ or shirt with our logo printed on it.  However, squad selection and buying a shirt does not mean playing in the team, but it is still a great achievement in itself!

Following our Wey Valley, Surrey Spring Rapid Play, which take place Sunday, 19th February, 2023 we select from the three squads the three playing teams, playing reserves and further reserves with their board orders to will take part in the Zonal events and, if we qualify, also the Finals.

We will select the following numbers for each team:

Under 9 Mixed and U11 Girls:

  • 12 playing team members
  • 4 playing reserves
  • 4 further reserves (do not travel or play unless there in illness/ withdrawal from the above playing squad members)

Under 11 Mixed:

  • 20 playing team members
  • 4 playing reserves
  • 4 further reserves (do not travel or play unless there in illness/ withdrawal from the above playing squad members)

This year the EPSCA zones and finals will take place as below:
